What is Mesh Wi-Fi?

Mesh Wi-Fi is the latest Wi-Fi technology to enter your home. With all the connected devices that are available, having access to the internet across your property is essential and Mesh Wi-Fi products are here to do just that.

What is Mesh Wi-fi?

Mesh Wi-Fi systems consist of 2 or more stations, that act like your Wireless router, which work together to give you internet coverage around your property. It provides you with a single SSID and hands over your connection to the best station automatically to ensure you get the strongest signal strength and performance available.

Wi-Fi Extenders/Repeaters

‘Hold on?’ I hear you say, ‘I have wi-fi extenders that do that already?’.

With each Wi-Fi extender, you must create another SSID which needs to be different toy your original. Each time you ‘extend’ your wireless range, the bandwidth available also halves.

if you are using IP telephony, or Video Chat, you cannot move about your property whilst on a call and you will have to stay attached to the same router/extender to ensure your call doesn’t drop unexpectedly, which isn’t a great user experience.

Mesh systems provide a higher bandwidth and signal strength between stations than Extenders can as well as only using the one SSID which is seamless on your devices as you roam around your home. Some systems also provide ‘backhaul’ technology which means that each station can physically connect to your internet router so every station performs like a base station under the same SSID.

There are many options for you to look at and as usual Price will be at the top of many lists as these systems don’t come cheap. But with the price comes performance, simple security management and setup directly aimed at the home user.

Some also come with Tr-Band technology. This means that they use 2 bands for client connectivity (2.4GHz and 5GHz) but also use the 3rd band (5GHz) solely for the purpose of communication between stations so as to not impact the Client bands.
